Is Sweden Safe?

A Resident's Perspective on Safety in Stockholm Amidst Recent Tragedy

I'm sure readers have heard or seen news or incidents about Sweden being unsafe, and I've often got that question if it is true but here are my thoughts as a resident living here compared to an outsider's perspective and statistics. Coincidentally, there was a tragedic news yesterday in Sweden that a shooting in a school area in the city of Örebro, west of Stockholm, took several lives and injured many others. My thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their lives.

My family has lived in the Stockholm area, geographically a suburb, over a decade, so the story can be centered around this area. It is important to recognize that even in a country, there are differences and realities in different regions.

Stockholm is generally a safe city, known for its well-maintained streets, good public services, and strong sense of community. Families can feel secure in neighborhoods like Östermalm, Södermalm, and Vasastan in Stocholm and its surburban, where children can walk to school safely, and people enjoy outdoor activities in parks and public spaces.
Schools in Stockholm area are well-equipped and prioritize student safety, with measures in place to ensure a good learning environment. The city's public transportation system is also reliable, making it easy for families to move around safely.

If, Families Considering Relocation

Sweden has long been regarded as a peaceful and progressive nation, offering a high quality of life, excellent healthcare, and a robust social security system. However, in recent years, concerns about safety have been raised, particularly regarding crime rates and gun violence. This blog provides a thorough analysis of safety in Sweden based on recent statistics, crime trends, and comparisons with other global cities, ultimately helping families determine whether Sweden remains a safe place to live.

Crime and Safety in Sweden: A Statistical Overview

Sweden’s crime statistics indicate that while general crime rates remain moderate, there are specific concerns regarding gun-related incidents and gang activity. Major urban centers such as Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö have seen pockets of increased violence, particularly in vulnerable neighborhoods. These areas include:

  • Stockholm: Husby, Rinkeby/Tensta, Hässelby/Vällingby, Skogås, Vårby
  • Gothenburg: Bergsjön, Biskopsgården, Hammarkullen, Hjällbo, Lövgärdet
  • Malmö: Södra Sofielund (Seved), Rosengård, Nydala/Hermodsdal/Lindängen

Despite these concerns, Sweden’s government has been proactive in addressing safety issues. Gothenburg, for instance, has launched a SEK 11 billion ($1.1 billion) investment plan to improve six of its most vulnerable areas, with a target of eliminating “particularly vulnerable areas” by 2025.

Gun Violence in Sweden: Facts and Comparisons

One of the most discussed topics regarding safety in Sweden is gun violence. While Sweden has strict gun laws, criminals have found ways to acquire firearms illegally through methods such as weapons smuggling, conversion of deactivated firearms, and the modification of toy guns and starter pistols. These illegal weapons primarily come from Eastern Europe, particularly the Balkans.

Gun Laws for Civilians

  • A weapon license is mandatory.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Firearms are only allowed for hunting or target shooting.
  • Background checks and security measures for storage are required.
  • Fully automatic weapons are banned, and semi-automatic weapons are heavily regulated.

These strict regulations mean that legally obtained firearms are rarely linked to crime. In contrast, gang-related gun violence primarily involves smuggled or illegally modified weapons.

Safety Ratings Compared to Global Cities

When assessing safety, particularly regarding gun crime and violence, Swedish cities fare well compared to other international locations. Below is a safety ranking (out of 10) for various cities:

  • Stockholm, Sweden: 8/10 – Low gun crime rates and active community safety measures.
  • San Francisco, USA: 6/10 – Moderate gun violence with socioeconomic challenges.
  • San Diego, USA: 8/10 – Lower gun violence and overall crime rates compared to many other large U.S. cities.
  • Boston, USA: 7/10 – Moderate violence but strong policing efforts.
  • Irvine, California, USA: 9/10 – Very low crime rates.
  • Texas (varies by city): 5/10 – Some urban areas face significant safety challenges.
  • London, UK: 8/10 – Low gun crime, but knife crime is a concern.
  • Paris, France: 7/10 – Low gun crime but occasional violence linked to social unrest.
  • Berlin, Germany: 8/10 – Low gun crime and strong public safety measures.
  • Seoul, South Korea: 9/10 – One of saftest countries in the world. Extremely low gun crime due to strict firearm regulations.

Sweden's major cities compare favorably to those in the US and parts of Europe, indicating that while concerns exist, Sweden remains a relatively safe place to live.

Conclusion: Should Families Consider Moving to Sweden?

For families considering relocating to Sweden, the overall safety outlook remains positive. While certain neighborhoods in major cities may have crime concerns, the Swedish government has been actively addressing these issues through strategic investments and community development programs. Additionally, Sweden's strict gun laws ensure that the general public is well-protected from firearm-related crime.

With good healthcare, education, and social welfare systems, Sweden continues to offer a high standard of living. As with any country, research into specific neighborhoods is essential, but for the most part, Sweden remains a safe and attractive destination for families looking to move.

If safety is the primary concern, Sweden still stands as a secure and well-regulated country, making it a reasonable choice for families seeking a new home.  BUT, I have to say that Sweden is not Sweden as before.
